Overview

Tech Academy is OudTech’s educational platform: beginners learn through video courses and quizzes, interns work on real projects, professionals collaborate, and clients post work. The Express + TypeScript backend is split into services for authentication, courses, quizzes, progress tracking, PDF certificates, internships, projects, notifications and admin dashboards, with MongoDB for storage and Socket.IO for real-time updates.

Responsibilities

  • Replace scattered environment variable usage with a typed, per-environment configuration layer
  • Containerise the stack with Docker Compose: fully dockerised or hybrid (local backend) modes, with MongoDB and MailHog for email testing
  • Audit and lock dependency versions, fixing broken and vulnerable packages
  • Refactor app bootstrapping: remove a duplicate Express app, fix route registration, migrate require calls to ES imports
  • Document how to run and test the project in each mode for the rest of the team

Impact

  • One-command dev and test environments, identical for every contributor
  • Configuration mistakes caught at compile time instead of at runtime
  • Cleaner, more maintainable codebase for a distributed volunteer team
